KICs Overview

Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) are to become key drivers of sustainable economic growth and competitiveness across Europe through world-leading innovation.

The KICs will be driving effective “translation” between partners in ideas, technology, culture, and business models, and will create new business for existing industry and for new endeavours.      

What are Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs)?

A KIC is a highly integrated, creative and excellence-driven partnership which brings together the fields of education, technology, research, business and entrepreneurship in order to produce new innovations and new innovation models that inspire others to emulate it.

How will KICs meet their objectives?

The KICs operate in an open environment, driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence and impact for Europe. This focus within the KICs will produce the critical mass to deliver new business creation, new jobs, new skills and entrepreneurial talents into the job market.


What charaterises the KICs?

The core activities of the KIC will bring together the innovation web to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, through entrepreneurship education, co-location, top quality leadership and management, combined with simplicity and a ‘CAN DO’ approach.

The EIT designated its three first KICs in December 2009:

- Information and Communication Society: EIT ICT Labs

- Sustainable Energy: KIC InnoEnergy
